#5: Gender
Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls is the unfinished business of our time, and one of the greatest human rights challenges in our world. While there has been some progress over the decades, gender disparities remain in economic and political realms and violence against women in all its forms is still prevalent.
EUTEC Chamber is clearly committed to bring gender equality to the top of the agenda. To contribute to the progress, we have established a Women in Tech Commission with the aim to provide a platform for cross-cultural and cross-industry exchange, to provide thought leadership and reach tangible change. We see gender equality in society, economy, and technology – as a critical transformational catalyzer – as a fundamental blueprint for a sustainable future.
Let us all work together for a future in which all children independent of gender can go to school, no girls are forced into early marriage, more women in STEM and leadership positions, as well as laws being passed to advance gender equality. We want to bring females leaders of the technological world together and make joint efforts to support, encourage and stand with women from all walks of life. The challenges will be discussing, designing, and implementing the appropriate strategies and measures for an inclusive ecosystem.
Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.
There has been progress over the last decades. However, as UN Secretary-General said “Limited gains in gender equality and women’s rights made over the decades are in danger of being rolled back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Women play a disproportionate role in responding to the virus, including as frontline healthcare workers and carers at home. Women’s unpaid care work has increased significantly as a result of school closures and the increased needs of older people.
Women are not only the hardest hit by this pandemic, they are also the backbone of recovery in communities. Putting women and girls at the centre of economies will fundamentally drive better and more sustainable development outcomes for all, support a more rapid recovery, and place the world back on a footing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
The COVID-19 pandemic provides an opportunity for radical, positive action to redress long-standing inequalities in multiple areas of women’s lives, and build a more just and resilient world. Text Source: United Nations
