China’s economy returned to growth in the second quarter after a deep slump at the start of the year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. China is well on its way to transit from a resource-intensive manufacturing hub to a modern, consumer-driven economy and has offered itself as a model for how an emerging economy can grow rapidly.
Regardless of the direction of the United States-China relationship, European industries need to explore options for fruitful co-existence with China. China is, and will continue to be, a major trade and investment partner for European countries. European companies have built up more foreign direct investment in China than the other way around and Chinese investment in Europe is growing and has focused strongly on technology.
