Before the covid-19 pandemic, the tourism sector represented about 8.5% of Africa’s GDP and was responsible for about 24 million jobs on the continent. Due to the often started log-down measures and closed border policies as well as different approaches by governments uncertainties for both, business & holiday travelers, to and inside Africa have grown significantly. What does it need for a rapid recovery?
Sustainable tourism is seen as a major opportunity to have a positive impact on low- & medium-income countries and it also well resonates with several SDGs including the promotion of inclusive growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. Additional positive impact can be achieved considering better for example gender balance, clean energy and local small-scale food producers.
Questions that will be discussed with a round of international experts from Africa and Europe will be: What has the African transport, travel & tourism sector to do in order to strategically position itself? What are climate-friendly business practices for operations and financing to grow participation opportunities for local people & businesses and to strengthen the communities´ independence? What are the best ways to integrate protection and conservation of the environment into business concepts? What scope of access to ICT, clean energy and tech appliances shall be supported to make local businesses in Africa more robust in the longer term? What type of travelers will be key and how many tourists are needed to offer profitable services?
